Editor’s Notes: Formed in 1959-63 by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell is the second largest man made reservoir in the United States. The Glen Canyon recreation area is home to many recreational water craft including houseboats, jet ski’s and pleasure cruisers. Since the dam flooded almost 150 miles of the Colorado River it created a large shoreline of stunning canyon and desert scenery. Rainbow Bridge, one of the many natural wonders can now visited by boat. The journey is approximately 50 miles up-stream with a 1 1/2 mile walk. Indian legend says the arches and bridges in the park are very sacred to the Navajo people and are a gateway into the spirit world.
Since its construction, houseboating on Lake Powell has become a favorite of families and locals for a relaxing summer vacation. The splendid natural scenery and the abundant water activities along with the remote access provide a unique local getaway.
