Travercial’s Travel Ideas Notes: This video shows not just the castle and its grounds, but also the fine roost of falcons maintained by the castle staff. The entire event is known as the “Bird of Prey Spectacle”. The castle is located in the scenic Belgian town of of the same name, where the Bouillon Castle is located atop the town by the nearby Semois river amid the verdant hills of Luxembourg province. The video’s narration is German but there are English subtitles in parts.
The medieval castle-fortress of Bouillon is one of the most ancient and interesting remains of feudalism in Belgium. The castle’s exact history is unknown, although the first fortifications are thought to go back as far as the 8th century. The first mention of a castle being located on the rocky spur above the town, was at the end of the 10th century. The castle-fortress of Bouillon was built upon three rocky outcrops overhanging the Semois river. It is characterized by a labyrinth of corridors and huge vaulted halls, some of which are shown in the video. The castle is famous due to Godefroid, known as a defender of Saint Sépulcre and the leader of the first Crusade (1096). He mortgaged the castle with the Archbishop of Liège in order to finance his expedition to the Holy Land. Additional changes of ownership and refurbishments have taken place over the years.
Today the castle can be visited most days during regular tourist hours. The falconry exhibition takes place year-round. Another interesting way to see the castle is with a evening visit with torches; guides are required and the fee is € 35 with € 2,50 for each torch. The tour takes about 1 hour.
