Editors’ Notes: The Transpantaneira is a 145-km-long, elevated gravel road that starts in Poconé (a small town known as the ‘Cidade Rosa’ (pink city) and ends in Porto Jofre. It is an excellent driver for viewing and photographing wildlife and birds. Its route, which crosses through the Pantanal, goes over 122 wooden bridges. From Poconé it is 63-km south to the next town of any substance, Pixaim, a journey which takes about two hours in the dry season and up to five in the wet. This is the only easily accessible settlement in the northern Pantanal with any tourist infrastructure.

There are many accommodations (pousadas) along the Transpantaneira, some of which originated from former fazendas trying to develop a second source of income.

For the most part, we suggest you travel here with professionals and there are significant rules, closings, etc. that have been put in place by the government to conserve the ecology of the area. One such company is Pantanal EcoExplorer. Other tour operators for the area can be easily found with some internet searches or by choosing a reputable operator in Brazil that will know established companies.
