Guatemala - Pacaya Volcano - Vulcan Pacaya

Travel Ideas: Take a climbing adventure on a visit to Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala.

Editor’s Notes: Up close and personal with a volcano is one way to heat things up. Known by the local name, Volcán Pacaya, is an active volcano in the Escuintla department of Guatemala. It is close to Antigua and Guatemala City. When it erupted in 1965, thhe volcano had been dormant for over a century but has not stopped flowing since. Increased eruptions which started in 2006 resulted in the formation of a lava river that you can see in this short film by H. Paul Moon. The videographer noted that when capturing the footage, the heat was so intense that he could only hold out for brief shots, needing to turn away regularly to avoid getting scorched. So rather than editing those reactions out, he retained them in editing, as “harsh cuts at once stylized and truthful (or comical, if the idea of getting sizzled makes you giggle)”. I found them an authentic touch to an elegant film.

Visiting Pacaya Volcano is one of the many things that can be done during a visit to Guatemala City. The lava flow will depend on the season, of course. Other activities in the area include a coffee tour into La Antigua with an opportunity to purchase delicious regional coffee or take a few hour drive to the town of Chichicastenango for the local markets. Additional travel ideas in the area include:

Plaza Fontabella, where a variety of outdoor activities are available such as book festivals, kids attractions, and evening activities like tourist festivals and fireworks. The National Zoo where special feedings take place during the full moon and the National Museums of Contemporary Art, History and the Guatemala Railroad.
