If you’d like to take the climb to Diamond Head (Lē ‘Ahi) State Monument, which is open from 6 am to 6 pm. One of the icon’s of Oahu, because of its volcanic nature, Diamond Head is actually more attractive from afar than taken up close. But the magnificent views of the island can’t be matched, so it’s well worth the climb.
It is believed that Diamond Head was formed during an eruption approximately three hundred thousand years ago. Due to prevailing winds and erosion, the southwestern rim of Diamond Head is higher than the rest of the cone. Both wind and water erosion have cut gullies into the side of the cone, some visible on the video.
The Kahala Tunnel cuts through the south side of the cone and into the crater. There is a parking lot and a trail to the summit that, after you 99-step climb, will provide you with a panoramic view of Waikiki and the Pacific. While the hike from the rim to the floor is a little less than a mile, it is mostly vertical. The climb is hot, there is virtually no shade due to the local flora and so hikers are encouraged to bring water and to be in good hiking condition. Even while hiking during the day, you’ll want to bring a flashlight due to the tunnels to overlooks that once served artillery fire control stations (spotters) on Diamond Head. If you decide to hike the trail, you can help protect the fragile environment from further erosion by staying on marked paths.
There are so many hotels in Oahu it would be difficult to choose just one to recommend, but if you have an interest in nature, hiking and enjoying the beauty of the island, we suggest you plan to stay outside of Honolulu.
