Hells Canyon is in the Lewis-Clark Valley between Washington and Idaho. It was formed in the last ice age by the waters of the 1,000-mile long Snake River. The canyon is a mile and a half from the river bottom (at Granite Creek Rapids) to the tallest mountaintop, making it the deepest in North America. The headwaters of the Snake River start in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and traverse 6 states.
Hells Canyon is the name of a section of the Snake River which stretches from Hells Canyon Dam to the Washington-Oregon border for 75 miles and is mostly inaccessible except by river craft. With its many wild rapids, the canyon is accessible today primarily by jetboat and inflatable raft, both of which are popular ways to see the canyon and ride the river.
Along the way on your river ride, you will find Indian petroglyphs, abundant wildlife, abandoned mines, shipwreck sites and old homesteads. The Nez Perce Indians occupied Hells Canyon for thousands of years and 150 archaeological sites have been identified. Buffalo Eddy, a scattered group of petroglyphs bearing 240 different designs is the most impressive.
There are plenty of other things to do in the area, so hikers, anglers and outdoor lovers can all enjoy themselves on a visit Hells Canyon. Overnight stays at rustic lodges complement the popular float trips via inflatable raft or kayak. Since the rapids range up to Class IV and V guided trips are recommended.
