Travel Ideas: See the unseen through the eyes of the camera ... photograph Japan from unique vantage points.
Editor’s Notes: The videographer and the photographer, hand in hand and yet coming from different perspectives. This video offers a refreshingly different take on a photo shoot – the meticulous care of setting up each shot, the wait for the perfect moment, the lighting, and setting just the right note. So evocative of Japanese art, it’s interesting that it’s shot in Japan.
From the Producer: The videographer, Brad Kremer, first became aware of Michael Levin’s photographs in 2010. Levin’s photographs of everyday places and common subjects are transformed into something much more when he views them through his lens. Since a large majority of Michael’s work is done in Japan, the producer felt an instant connection to it as he, too, has a bond with Japan and has traveled and documented the landscape extensively in his own way. After watching his film Hayaku (www,vimeo.com/12112529) Mr. Levin contacted Brad regarding a project he was working on and felt it might be of interest to him. He told Brad that he really appreciated his work and recognized the dedication and effort that went into it. Mr. Kremer agreed to go on a trip with Michael Levin to Japan and work on his project. But for Brad, there was a greater opportunity at hand. They had several conversations and Brad gave him some ideas about expanding the project. A month later they were in Japan having beers and sushi.
Brad wanted to document Michael at work, in Japan, in a way that hasn’t really been explored with photographers. He told Michael of his idea to make an artistic representation of his experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun – to show him in his working environment in a way that complimented his work. Not to explain it with words, but to feel it through the flow of the film. Brad wanted to show the process, the journey, the adventure in a way that would give the viewer and emotional connection to Michael and his photography.
The final result is something that Brad (and the Travercial editor!) thinks is truly origin. It is something that showcases who Michael is, and more importantly, what his work is all about. This film is a collaboration between Michael and Brad and their love for photography, film, Japan and adventure. This is a subject that Michael and Brad are continuing to explore as they plan more trips together, more films and more adventures.
