Madagascar, quatrième plus grande île du monde. A l’est du continent africain elle est isolée et riche d’un climat très varié. L’île a vu se développer au court des millénaires une faune et une flore unique au monde représentées par un nombre important d’espèces endémiques, comme les lémuriens. Cette diversité se retrouve aussi dans les paysages. Les Hautes Terres se caractérisent par leurs rizières, le Grand sud par ses vastes espaces arides. À l’Est, le climat reste humide et la végétation luxuriante. Enfin, l’Ouest est le pays aux baobabs.
Si cet isolement a produit des diversités biologiques et environnementales extraordinaires, il est également en partie responsable de la richesse de la culture malgache.
