Travel Ideas: Visit up close with the lemurs at Nahampoana Reserve.

Travercial Travel Ideas Notes: The Nahampoana reserve is a privately owned nature park located about 7 km. from Fort Dauphin on the southeast coast of Madagascar. It was constructed in 1901 and can be found at the foot of St. Louis peak. It is home to multiple species of lemur in addition to other island flora and wildlife. The Verreaux’s Sifaka is one of the varieties of six different species of lemur that you can see in the Reserve and is shown in this video. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the 77 species of lemurs on Madagascar are facing possible extinction, with 11 of the species in a critical condition.

During the early morning hours various groups of lemurs will usually be found playing in the trees or on the grounds of the old colonial house. Other animals in the park include chameleons, tortoises, crocodiles and a wide variety of birds. There are also hiking trails on the grounds and it is possible to stay at the park overnight.
